A stretch for a solo founder

Exa leans enterprise, sales-led, or developer-heavy. It can work, but most solo founders should look at a solo-ready option first.

Exa is a search engine built for AI, not for a person clicking links. It exposes an API that returns clean, relevant web content designed to be fed straight into a language model or agent, which makes it a common retrieval layer inside AI applications.

Set expectations honestly: this is developer infrastructure, not a tool a non-technical founder uses directly. If your job-to-be-done is “I want to research something,” the right answer is Perplexity, which gives you the same kind of AI-grounded search in an app, no code required. Exa is for the builder who is wiring search into a product or a custom agent.

Where Exa shines is when you (or a developer) are building something that needs fresh, structured, AI-ready web data, a research agent, a retrieval-augmented app, a custom monitoring tool. There is a free allowance to prototype with and usage-based pricing after. For a solo founder building their own AI product it is a strong primitive. For a solo founder just trying to run a business, it is the wrong layer of the stack.
